Random shots: Busker.

November 30, 2011 Leave a comment

Recently took a few shots of a busker at a market. It was quite funny to see his huge smile on seeing me take his picture (which I missed by a second) followed by a less dramatic, but no less pleasing smile which lingered…

After that he continued to shoot glances at me to see if I was still shooting, somewhat suspicious glances from the look of this crop, lol!

*Pictures taken on my Olympus EPL-1, with the frankly awesome 45mm/f1.8 “portrait” lens. :)

Selling a Bullet. And the power of Mudah…

Recently have been trying to simplify my life, in various ways including stripping out unneeded possessions. Sometimes this can prove drastic, other times simple. But trying to apply the basic maxim of “use it or lose it” has been the basic tenet behind the decisions to sell, give away or donate some of the stuff that I possess.

I think most of us that are privileged enough to have computers and internet access probably own more clutter and unnecessary things than we would like to admit to. Sure, many people are happy with that, and some positively like to collect (or to hoard!) as many things as take their interest. But I’ve changed from that, so many things are going “out” and if some make a bit of money in the process, then win all the way around. As long as I do not immediately rush out and spend the money on more things which are going to end up on the same merry-go-round in the future. ;) That requires more self-discipline!

So I have an old guitar. A rather nice old guitar, being a vintage Fender Bullet from the early 1980′s and in excellent condition. And there are not a lot of them around, especially genuine USA made versions. Many copies, and “Frankenguitars” cobbled together from parts, exist, but the genuine item? Well, even on US Ebay, you’d be lucky to get 5 or 6 listed. So with that in mind, I did a bit of research, and established the market value at about $450-600USD. Originally I was using a lower value, converted it by mistake from GBP, and ended up with the figure of RM2000. Optimistic, I thought, but worth a punt, and any decent lower offer would still make my day.

I should point out that although owning guitars for the last 30 years, I cannot play! I noodle, I make annoying noises, I amuse myself and disturb others, but actual playing? Not in my repertoire of skills. So, this guitar is well and truly redundant to me. (I’ve been annoying people with a bass guitar for the last few years anyway, but that’s a different story ;) )

Anyway, waffle over. I’ve never used Mudah.com before, but heard good things, so on a whim I fired up the browser, and placed an advert, with a couple of decent pictures, and waited to see what transpired. Well, what transpired was an inundation of emails, SMSes, and then calls from as far away as Langkawi and JB, asking questions, making offers, until it totally took up my day dealing with all the queries. I was overwhelmed.

One guy wanted to reserve it and was prepared to drive up from Melaka that evening to view and buy. So I put it on hold – for that day only – and he arrived, rather later than optimal for testing guitars after 11:00pm that evening. It was what he wanted, he was the same age as the guitar, which I found amusing, and was armed with the appropriate cash donation to the “use it or lose it” fund. ;) Business done, he left, leaving me to try and get some sleep (which I failed to do, for some reason!) and resist the temptation to go shopping in the morning.

So, thumbs up to Mudah.com.my! From advertising in the morning to 2k in my hand in the evening of the same day – can’t say fairer than that. Mind you, it *is* a beautiful, rare guitar, and the new owner has bought an investment as well as a musical instrument because it will only rise in value. So I’ve attached a few shots, taken just before sale. 2k is a bargain, friend, but 2k is also *just right* for market price, so everybody wins. A very satisfying day.

Interim post: The World’s best “fan” club!

July 20, 2010 Leave a comment

(As I still haven’t sorted my 1000+ pics from Shanghai yet…)

Obsessives might be a better word, but the NIN fan club, totally self-organised, started a project to film and document the band’s last major tour. They organised filmmakers, film editors, sound editors, producers, and paid for people to film the final concerts of the “Lights In The Sky” tour, which marked NIN’s penultimate performances.

They did play a final ”Wave Goodbye” tour, which I was fortunate enough to see in Singapore, albeit a cut-down but no less spirited performance.

So, taking it upon themselves, they produced 2 sets – a 3 DVD boxed set, and a 2 Blu-Ray set – which they made available  for a nominal fee, or even for free if you were prepared to take a chance ;)

And I took that chance, and here’s what arrived in the post today – a boxed set of 3 fully produced DVDs, booklet, postcard and sticker – all FOC, delivered to my door. They may be obsessive, but what generous obsessives, and what a nice gift to receive. :)

Muse in Singapore.

February 6, 2010 Leave a comment

On the 2nd Feb, we travelled down South, to watch “The Big Night Out” concert, at which Muse were the headlining band. We missed them when they played both Malaysia and Singapore a couple of years ago, so particularly keen to catch them this time.
Overall it was not bad, but didn’t quite live up to expectations. Competent, but not overly inspiring, with a lack of improvisation and a tendency to concentrate on playing the “hit” songs which they have been playing for the last 9 years. ;) but the Drums and Bass were tight!
Ultimately nice to have watched them live, but I don’t think I would travel to see them again. And it wasn’t *loud* enough! Seeing Nine Inch Nails a few months ago left the ears ringing for hours afterwards :) but this didn’t have the same punch and attack of pure audio volume that I expected.
However, it was quite entertaining, and we have bought tickets for Placebo who are playing in March, so there is something else to look forward to. :)
Here are a few pictures that I managed to take, despite being quite far away.

NIN – Wave Goodbye, Fort Canning, SG.

August 21, 2009 Leave a comment

10-08-2009.

NIN’s final tour, 1989-2009, second to last ever NIN concert, at Fort Canning park, Singapore.

Organisation: Very poor, but thanks to Lynne from the Crew who managed to get us in via the rear exit ahead of most priority advance ticket holders (considering I bought our tickets back in April, I had priority entrance tickets)

Concert: After an extended (very extended!) soundcheck, when NIN came onstage,  let rip into an awesome, powerful set with the expected crowd surging and moshing. A whole new generation of people learned the meaning of Ultra-Violence. Everyone (or according to some, just me and a few others! ;) ) really got into the traditional, heavy moshing that needs to be unleashed at a concert of this level of sound and fury. And the sound quality was truly excellent, and beautifully loud and crisp.

Just fucking awesome, and great to finally see them live, close and very personal. Still counting the bruises. ;)

Trapped – in my own head.

“Medication”

Medication for us all, it is a new way
& we’re gonna take it cause we love it
Don’t you know?

Is this the dose you’ve been dreamin’ of?
A revelation from a gun
Doesn’t matter
Overtaken, mine was yours, now overthrown

Just copulation in a song
I’m so contagious, can i cum?
In the new way
All of us cast asides became what has become

Medication for us all
You think you know me, well you’re wrong
Doesn’t matter
All of us cast aside became what has become.

Never truer words for our times … and a damn fine song.

Billy Bragg – NPWA, 2003.

I grew up in a company town
And I worked real hard ‘’til that company closed down
They gave my job to another man
On half my wages in some foreign land
And when I asked how could this be
Any good for our economy?
I was told nobody cares
So long as they make money when they sell their shares

Can you hear us? Are you listening?
No power without accountability!

I lost my job, my car and my house
When ten thousand miles away some guy clicked on a mouse
He didn’t know me, we never spoke,
He didn’t ask my opinion or canvass for my vote
I guess its true, nobody cares
‘Til those petrol bombs come spinning through the air
Gotta find a way to hold them to account
Before they find a away to snuff our voices out

Can you hear us? Are you listening?
No power without accountability!

The ballot box is no guarantee that we achieve democracy
Our leaders claim their victory when only half the people have spoken
We have no job security in this global economy,
Our borders closed to refugees but our markets forced open

The World Bank says to Mexico,
We’ll cut you off if you don’t keep your taxes low
But they have no right to wield that sword
‘Cos they take their orders from the chairman of the board

IMF, WTO,
I hear these words just every place I go
Who are these people? Who elected them?
And how do I replace them with some of my friends?

Can you hear us? Are you listening?
No power without accountability!

Had a new stamp made up for the business the other day, and just gazing at the box I noticed whose name they had used as an example of their product. LOL! Pure coincidence? ;)

Best song title I’ve heard this week.

November 29, 2008 Leave a comment

A new album that I doubt many of you are familiar with, called “Black Sheep” by Julian Cope – ex “The Teardrop Explodes” for oldies and late 70′s throwbacks.

It has to be said that Cope’s work has become, well, let’s be frank and call it weird shit since his Jehovahkill album of 2000. And he has written two huge tomes of work on Megalithic structures in the UK, and in Europe. Well recommended reading if you can lift the damn books off the table! I have a copy of the first hardback edition, and I’m still not sure if he didn’t intend it to be a monolith itself ;)

He is totally out there, as his Head Heritage site proves, but the song title, and I love it:

All The Blowing-Themselves-Up Motherfuckers

(Will Realise The Minute They Die That They Were Suckers)
