We don’t need no stinkin’ helmets

Filed under: Malaysia, Motorcycling, Travels — shoot @ 3:49 pm

After my, regrettably brief, trip to JB recently - lots of activities closed due to weather, nature rules all unfortunately - I got back to KL after a blistering ride (hope I didn’t leave you TOO far behind, M ;) - and after disrobing (OK, painfully peeling off the layers of body armour and wetgear, not nice) I realised that my primary motorcycle helmet was, shall we say politely, less than entirely fresh inside.

Fortunately it has a removable lining, so what I usually do is remove all the “coolmax” padding, and wash in the machine. However, this morning, I decided to be more extreme, and wrapped the whole helmet in it’s neat carrying bag and stuck the whole thing into the washing machine. Cue horrors from Mrs. S. - “Are you sure that’s wise, won’t it scratch, break or get damaged?” - Fah, I replied, worth taking the risk. Set the machine to gentle Eco cycle anyway (same as I use for her bras which are equally sensitive to extreme washes, LOL) - and came back 30 minutes later to find a perfectly polished helmet (stop laughing in the back there, please!) with a fresh, and freshly conditioned, interior, all ready for my next road trip which will be in a few weeks, I hope.

Technology = wonderful sometimes.

Wonder if I can sell the slogan to Samsung - “Doesn’t just freshen your clothes, polishes your helmet to a gleaming finish at the same time?”

Perhaps not. But saves me doing it manually in the future. :)

  2. LOL! It wasn’t that bad - I ‘ve known people let it get a *lot* worse, and mask it with cologne or aftershave ;( It was just a touch sweaty, less so than the rest of me.
    I’ve always enjoyed polishing my helmet up to a mirror shine.
    Anytime you want to come for a ride, I can guarantee a freshly sanitized helmet ;)

  3. Hey Grant!

    Exams finally finished so I have a chance to get caught up! Thanks for updating me on sixthseal, too!

    LOL, I really enjoyed this post!! I wouldn’t have thought to try that. Ingenious ;)

    Last winter, I bought the cheapest pair of slippers I could find at Wal-Mart. They were made of fleece and had rubber soles. I tried washing them at the school laundromat to get rid of the nasty rubbery smell and they turned out kind of warped in shape and the lining was peeling off, probably because the glue was water-soluble and it might have gotten too warm in the dryer…

    That reminds me of some unbelievably despicable people stealing unattended dryers by pulling out the clothes halfway through the cycle and replacing it with their own - which happened once to me, but I’ll save that story for another day ;)

    Best wishes,
    <3k

  4. Nice to see you back, Katherine - been a while. Get your blog going again as well!! :) Time for more stories from your end too!
    Washing my helmet in this manner is definitely not in the recommended instructions, but it worked so well that it will probably become routine, because, as per Lainie’s comment, they can get pretty nasty, very fast in this climate. *Not* nice, LOL!
